And that, without mentioning specifics, is the entire plot. After the relative success of Hogfather in , Vadim Jean decided to take the series in a surprising direction: backwards.
Correctly in my view, he chose perhaps the archetypal novel in Pratchett's canon to adapt first. Hogfather was Pratchett at his absolute height, mixing adventure with philosophical commentary and existential humour, the most mature expression of such Discworldly themes of imagination vs.
As such, they lack some of the sophistication one comes to expect from the series. The books' humour, which would eventually become character and situation-driven, here operates on the level of broad parody, lampooning the absurdities of many fantasy and fairy tale conventions.
The characterisation, which would become far more complex in later novels, is as broad as a wall, with Twofower the naive Asian tourist and Rincewind the cowardly non-hero.
In a move that was either very wise or bewilderingly silly, Jean decided to cast Sean Astin as Twoflower, even though in the books he is East Asian in appearance.
Perhaps this was done to lessen the racial stereotype, but if so, that doesn't reflect well on the source material. His decision to cast the elderly David Jason as Rincewind, who in the books is a youngish man with a scraggly attempt at a beard, is less explicable, other than Jean was simply grateful that Jason wanted to do another series with him.
But if the plot is slight, the actors certainly give it their all. Astin plays Twoflower with just the right kind of naivete, while Jason, though miscast, creates a Rincewind that is suitably cynical and craven.
For Pratchett fans, a number of pleasing retcons have been incorporated: The Librarian becomes an orangutan much earlier; Death is now his fully-evolved, pleasantly bemused self, and the Patrician is unquestionably Vetinari, here played by Jeremy Irons- a nod to Pratchett saying that a good actor for Vetinari would be "that guy from Die Hard", ie Alan Rickman.
In summary, I think Pratchett fans will find pleasure in it, but others should probably stay away. Sign In.

Tried and tested o A rubber band penetrates through your forearm. The basic story revolves around Rincewind the unfinished wizard and a tourist named Twoflower, who arrives in Ankh-Morpork, the oldest city in the world, which has no concept of tourism.
He has a peculiar phrase book and tries to make himself understood. Finally, he and Rincewind find a common tongue and thus begin their travels.
There is the Luggage, a large sort of sea chest which follows Twoflower around — on many tiny little legs!
It opens and closes — killing hapless thieves and snapping at others. It seems to be full of gold, among other things, which makes for more fun, since Twoflower has no understanding of currency exchange rates and splashes his gold about temptingly.
He wants to observe real life, a barroom brawl, if you could arrange it, please, and if people get hurt or killed, well that's reality for the place, isn't it?
The setting is more or less medieval, as so many fantasies seem to be, with inns and horses and beggars and swordfights, damsels and dragons. Runes glowed on its surface.
My favourite character has always been Death, who speaks in capital letters with no quotation marks, He hates being foiled when the "system" fails.
Death offers to help him get there in time. Death watched him go, and shrugged bitterly. He turned, and noticed the fish salesman.
Much later, a demon disguised as Death, lets slip that reincarnation can be an improvement. Indeed, I think the first I read was Mort, and I got the hang of it quickly.
There are dozens of others as well as countless books for readers of different ages. I'm sure this would have been a 5-star read for me back in , and I plan to read some more.

The Color of Magic is, in fact, four novella-length stories stitched together to create a novel-length book.
But don't you worry, the book reads well as a whole without a jerking bump to stop the journey. I wouldn't have even noticed the stitching if I haven't known it was there.
As the story starts, Rincewind a disgraced wizard meets up with Twoflower an oblivious tourist and his rather menacing walking luggage yes, with a luggage like Twoflower's you don't have to worry about carry your things The Color of Magic is, in fact, four novella-length stories stitched together to create a novel-length book.
As the story starts, Rincewind a disgraced wizard meets up with Twoflower an oblivious tourist and his rather menacing walking luggage yes, with a luggage like Twoflower's you don't have to worry about carry your things around; the several pairs of feet under the large chest will follow you keeping your belongings close by and always safe Wizard and tourist are thrown together by unforeseen, and fantastic -but not at all unbelievable- circumstances, and soon engage in a tour of Discworld the alternate universe born from Pratchett's supreme inventiveness.
The tour is funny and surprising, and the story will carry you around without effort. However, if you're looking for a tight plot, consistent world building, or if silly British humor annoys you, this novel, and all Discworld for all that matters, may not be for you.
The plot does meander a bit, but Pratchett's writing skills keep your focus somewhere else, so you don't even care. One thing is clear even in this the first novel of the Discworld series, Pratchett has bucket loads of talent.
If you like to laugh, then Pratchett's your man. His comedy timing is fantastic, and he possesses the intellect and the ability to make you laugh out loud regardless if you like, or read, or are even familiar with fantasy nonetheless, some familiarity with the basic tropes of fantasy will aid in your enjoyment.
However, if you've read other Discoworld novels, you will notice that when it comes to topical humor, this novel is a bit thinner than Pratchett's later additions to the series; understandable, since it was written more tan two decades ago.
Now, regardless of it age, the novel still feels remarkably fresh , mostly thanks to the imperishable quality of humor in which we laugh at ourselves.
View all 8 comments. It had some funny moments, but I really struggled to get through it. In all fairness to the people who suggested I read the Discworld series, this is not one of the ones they said I should start with.
I think I mostly had a hard time slogging through all of the world-building and made up words. Fantasy has never been my thing, because I'm not someone who enjoys reading descriptions of the characters surroundings.
I'm not giving up on the series, though. I think I'll just go back through my book It had some funny moments, but I really struggled to get through it.
I think I'll just go back through my book recommendations and find the ones I was told to start with. Also, this series has so many books that I will probably never be able to finish it, which kept me from reading it in the first place.
Apart from the fact that they always seemed a bit too ridiculous to actually be good. Now, I did catch myself laughing a few times and generally enjoying it much more than I thought I would.
The humour ranges from immature to fantastic and makes for a very entertaining read. Apart from that, the stories are fast-paced, imaginative and exciting.
It won't take long for me to pick up the sequels, I'm sure. Find more of my books on Instagram View all 7 comments. Apr 20, TL rated it liked it.

A nice start to the series, plenty of action and some humor : The scenes with Krull and near the edge of the world were one of my many favorites It seemed alot to cram into one novel, at times my eyes glazed over and I had to re-read a couple passages.
Don't get me wrong, it was all interesting but it could've been spread out more. Hats off to you once again Mr. Pratchett for bringing this to us : Read David's excellent review , he captures it wonderfully.
Aug 03, Amanda rated it it was ok Shelves: meh , blog. It just didn't do it for me. Unfortunately, this book has been recommended to me so many times by well-meaning friends who know my love of absurd British humor that it couldn't possibly live up to the hype.
It suffers from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy syndrome. For years, everyone I knew--friends, family, students, co-workers--would ask me if I had read Hitchhiker's and their mouths would drop when I admitted no, I hadn't.
Their response was always the same, "Oh, but you h Meh. Their response was always the same, "Oh, but you have to!
It's like it was written for YOU! Ditto for The Color of Magic. I'll admit, Pratchett has a way with words and there was the occasional turn of phrase in response to which I made that air-escaping-from-the-nose sound that's not full bodied enough to be considered a snort of laughter.
There was the infrequent half-smile. A few head nods in appreciation of a clever conceit. But, alas, there were no tear-inducing uncontrollable fits of laughter, which is what I expected.
Will I read more Pratchett? Yes, because I have at least three more books by him lying about. I just hope they're better than this. Welcome to Discworld; the land of the strange and scary, of the weird and wonderful. It's important to know, before you enter this magical and frankly absurd land, that you are a pawn in a life-sized game of Dungeons and Dragons.

Rincewind and Twoflower are then taken by the Krullians to their capital, where they learn that the Krullians intend to discover the sex of Great A'Tuin by launching a space capsule over the edge of the Disc, and plan to sacrifice Rincewind and Twoflower to get the god Fate to smile on the voyage, Fate insisting on their sacrifice after they caused him to lose the earlier game.
Rincewind and Twoflower attempt to escape, but end up stealing the capsule, which is launched with Twoflower inside, the tourist wishing to see the other worlds of the universe.
Rincewind is unable to get into the capsule in time, and falls off the Disc alongside it, the Luggage following them soon after.
The story segues into the beginning of The Light Fantastic ; the two books can therefore be seen as one two-volume novel. The four main parts are lengthy, and have been likened to short stories or novellas rather than chapters.
A graphic novel , illustrated by Steven Ross and adapted by Scott Rockwell, was first published as a four-part comic in by the Innovative Corporation, of Wheeling, WV and then published as a single volume by Corgi on 12 November Part 1 was originally announced for publication by Innovative on 10 December , but it was delayed as Terry Pratchett had not been shown the artwork for approval as contractually required and disliked it, so the first issue had to be redrawn.
Crucial differences between the book and comic include the cutting-out of some of the adventures in Ankh-Morpork and Krull, along with combining the characters of Galder Weatherwax and Ymper Trymon.
Also, in the book, the female Dragonriders are described as being topless, as barbarian women in fiction tend to be.
However, in the graphic novel the women wear chain-mail chestpieces as well as the clothing described in the book. David Jason starred in the role of Rincewind.
